I listened a lot to PJ's newest album while traveling this weekend. Let me begin by saying I am a huge fan of all of her work- especially "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" and "Is this Desire?".
"Uh Huh Her" struck me right off as less polished than "Stories" but that is one of its wonderful qualities- like the album "Rid of Me". Its like she recorded most of it herself with a 4 track analogue. Every single song is amazing- especially "Desperate Kingdom of Love", "You Come Through", and "The Darker Days of Me & Him". Actually, it is hard to not love any of the songs on the album. "Cat on a Wall" in the beginning makes me think of "Good Fortune" on "Stories" but it is still a great song. "Shame" has wonderful lyrics. Perhaps I could say that "What the F*@k" is my least favorite- but it is a great song.
"No Child of Mine", "The End" and "Desperate Kingdom of Love" leave me wanting them to be longer. The album has a lot of shorter songs that are incredible, but when they end, I find myself wanting 3-4 more minutes of them. Listening to "You Come Through" I want it to open into a huge refrain, but it doesn't, which is maybe what makes the song in the end so amazing. Much of the album is right on the precipice of something huger, and it really is amazing how well that works for many of the songs.
"Pocket Knife" is a wonderful feminist kind of song- reminds me of teen angst with great lyrics.
So, I highly recommend this album. The length will make you want more PJ but it is very worth it. I still think "stories" is Polly Jean's masterpiece but this album has something of its own as well.

What makes 'Stories' such a great album is the consistantly brilliant standard of the songwriting - Polly's earlier albums don't have this - and I'm not sure that 'Uh Huh Her' quite matches up - time will tell.....
